TAKE15 for Your Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health. But with such little time on our hands, how can we prioritise it?

World Mental Health Day takes place on 10 October each year, and 2022’s event focuses on making mental health a global priority for everyone.

So, what can we do to help make it happen?

Here at Side By Side, we’re launching our annual TAKE15 campaign, encouraging you to spend just a quarter of an hour a day on your mental health.

What is TAKE15?

Daily stress is inevitable. But having the ability to recognise and understand when you’ve hit your limit is another story.

Learning how to manage your emotional wellbeing can be challenging, but it’s a necessary step to keeping your mental health in check.

TAKE15 is designed to encourage everyone to spend 15 minutes a day on their mental health. Whether that means playing a game, exercising or chatting with a mate, a quarter of an hour can make a surprisingly big difference to our wellbeing.

Being happy and successful takes time and effort, and so our campaign aims to help. Everyone can benefit from a little time out, and 15 minutes a day isn’t much to ask.

How can it help you?

Short breaks can benefit you in all sorts of ways, from improved memory and energy levels to reduced stress and better physical performance.

15 minutes of mindful relaxation is one small thing you can do each day that can have a big impact on your mental and physical wellness.

Ways to TAKE15

Get involved this October by taking 15 minutes out each day to focus on your mental wellbeing. The main thing to remember is that the activity you choose should be relaxing and mindful.

Here’s how you can TAKE15…

Physical activity

Physical activity is not only good for the body, but it’s great for stimulating your mind. That’s because it releases feel-good chemicals that boost self-esteem and focus your energy.

Even if exercise is already a massive part of your daily routine, make sure at least 15 minutes of it are spent on something you really enjoy. For example, if you can get outdoors, a walk in nature is a great mental booster.

Don’t worry if not. There are plenty of indoor activities you can try, whether it’s yoga, boxing or a 15-minute session on your favourite machine at the gym.

Mindfulness

Taking time to recentre is important for your mental wellbeing. Simple things like enjoying a coffee break or having a healthy snack can improve mindfulness and reduce stress.

If you notice yourself feeling anxious, stressed or in a negative mindset about something, a 15-minute mindfulness break can make a difference.

When you come back, you should feel refocused, energised and ready for the next challenge.

Rest

Calming your mind and body is proven to combat stress. But when you’re constantly on the go, giving yourself the rest need – and deserve – can be tricky.

Rest should always be a priority if you feel physically or mentally overwhelmed. Whether you take a power nap or ditch the screens for a digital detox, try to pay attention to what you need and listen to it – your future self will thank you for it.

Allowing your mind and body to rest will improve your chance of getting a decent amount of shuteye too, leaving you well-rested and ready to take on the day.

Millions of people struggle to sleep because they can’t switch off. Getting in the habit of resting before bed can ensure better sleep and improved mental wellbeing.

We hope TAKE15 inspires you to become your best de-stressed self. It may seem straightforward but making small changes can contribute to lasting benefits for your mental health.
